SMILING

Possibly the most valuable skill you can develop in college, and in real life, is to SMILE. It will help you make friends when you first arrive at the dorm. It will make you more attractive to the opposite sex. It can even help you ace an interview. Sometimes, a smile can be the deciding factor between failure and success.
Perhaps this poem will more clearly demonstrate the benefits of smiling, and why it is so important. Smiling, according to this poem, is an inexhaustible resource that you can use to better the lives of yourself and those around you.

A smile costs nothing, but gives much.
It enriches those who receive,
without making poorer those who give.
It takes but a moment,
but the memory of it sometimes lasts forever.
None is so rich or mighty
that he can get along without it.
A smile creates happiness in the home,
fosters good will in business,
and is the countersign of friendship.
It brings rest to the weary,
cheer to the discouraged,
sunshine to the sad,
and it is natures best antidote for trouble.
Yet it cannot be bought, begged,
borrowed, or stolen, for it is something that is of no value
to anyone until it is given away.
Some people are too tired to give you a smile.
Give them one of yours,
as none needs a smile so much
as he who has no more to give.

This may sound like a bunch of hippy gobbledygook, but smiling really can make a difference in your life. The applications of a smile are limitless. Next time you are feeling depressed try curling your lips in an upward direction. You may notice that the simple contortion of your face muscles into a smile can improve your mood drastically. This is because the neurological process of smiling is bidirectional positive feedback loop. You smile because you are happy and you can make yourself happy by smiling.
